About NCLEX-PN
The NCLEX-PN is the examination nursing regulatory bodies use, with the rest of their requirements, when deciding whether to license a person as a practical nurse or a vocational nurse. It is taken on a computer at a test centre. It is not a paper test.
The real test adapts. After each operational item the computer estimates ability and chooses the next item. Every candidate answers at least 85 items and at most 150, and the clock is five hours, including the introductory screen and any breaks. The length of an examination is not itself a pass or a fail. This site's practice form is fixed. It does not adapt. It uses 113 items, one count inside the published range of 85 to 150, and every candidate gets the same items.
A minimum-length examination has 52 scored items from the eight Client Needs areas, 18 scored items in three clinical-judgment case studies (six items each), and 15 unscored pretest items. Case studies follow six steps: recognize cues, analyze cues, prioritize hypotheses, generate solutions, take action and evaluate outcomes. About 10 percent of items are stand-alone clinical-judgment items, and that share depends on length. Content may vary by up to 3 percentage points from the published ranges.
The result is pass or fail. A candidate passes by reaching at least the passing standard. The computer usually stops when it is 95 percent sure the ability estimate is clearly above or clearly below that standard, once the minimum length is reached. At 150 items it uses the final estimate alone. If time runs out before 85 items, the result is fail. If time runs out after 85 items, the final estimate is compared with the passing standard. There is no published percentage-correct passing score, and this site does not turn a practice total into a logit.
