About USMLE
The USMLE is the licensing examination sequence used by state medical boards in the United States. It has three Steps. Step 1 tests the sciences basic to medicine. Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) tests clinical science for supervised patient care. Step 3 tests whether a physician can practise without supervision, and it is the only Step with computer-based case simulations.
From 14 May 2026, Step 1 is one day and one 8-hour session: fourteen blocks of 30 minutes, up to 20 questions in a block and up to 280 questions in the day, plus a minimum of 55 minutes of break time and a 5-minute optional tutorial. Time you do not use in the tutorial or in a block is added to the break. You can review items only inside the open block.
Step 1 results for exams taken on or after 26 January 2022 are reported only as pass or fail. The passing standard on the three-digit scale is 196, and that number is not printed on the score report. There is no single published table from the number correct to a three-digit score. The bulletin says the percent correct needed to pass varies by form, and that examinees typically must answer about 60 percent correctly.
From 7 May 2026, Step 2 CK is one 9-hour day: sixteen blocks of 30 minutes. The Step 2 CK page says a block will not exceed 20 questions and the day will not exceed 318. A software notice lists 316 questions and 18 to 20 per block. The minimum passing score is 218 on the three-digit scale for exams on or after 1 July 2025. This site does not include a Step 2 CK practice test.
Step 3 is two days, on the software in place from 10 March 2026. Day 1 (Foundations of Independent Practice) is about 7 hours: 232 multiple-choice items in 12 blocks of 30 minutes (18 to 20 items), with 55 minutes of break time and a 5-minute optional tutorial. Day 2 (Advanced Clinical Medicine) is about 9 hours: 180 multiple-choice items in 9 blocks of 20, then 13 to 14 case simulations of at most 10 or 20 minutes of real time, a 6-minute case tutorial, and at least 45 minutes of break time. The minimum passing score is 200 for exams on or after 1 January 2024. This site does not include a Step 3 practice test.
